We don't all have seventy-three weights of stick-up-my-ass Helvetica sitting on our seventeen-inch MacBook Pros. Sorry the entire world can't all be done in stark Eurotrash Swiss type. Sorry some people like to have fun. Sorry I'm standing in the way of your minimalist Bauhaus-esque fascist snoozefest. Maybe sometime you should take off your black turtleneck, stop compulsively adjusting your Tumblr theme, and lighten the fuck up for once.

People love me. Why? Because I'm fun. I'm the life of the party. I bring levity to any situation. Need to soften the blow of a harsh message about restroom etiquette? SLAM. There I am. Need to spice up the directions to your graduation party? WHAM. There again. Need to convey your fun-loving, approachable nature on your business' website? SMACK. Like daffodils in motherfucking spring.

When people need to kick back, have fun, and party, I will be there, unlike your pathetic fonts. While Gotham is at the science fair, I'm banging the prom queen behind the woodshop. While Avenir is practicing the clarinet, I'm shredding "Reign In Blood" on my double-necked Stratocaster. While Univers is refilling his allergy prescriptions, I'm racing my tricked-out, nitrous-laden Honda Civic against Tokyo gangsters who'll kill me if I don't cross the finish line first. I am a sans serif Superman and my only kryptonite is pretentious buzzkills like you.

It doesn't even matter what you think. You know why, jagoff? Cause I'm famous. I am on every major operating system since Microsoft fucking Bob. I'm in your signs. I'm in your browsers. I'm in your instant messengers. I'm not just a font. I am a force of motherfucking nature and I will not rest until every uptight armchair typographer cock-hat like you is surrounded by my lovable, comic-book inspired, sans-serif badassery.

Enough of this bullshit. I'm gonna go get hammered with Papyrus.

"Above Then Beyond" and Pixar's "Up": just a coincidence?

In 2005, a group of students at ESRA made a short film called "Above Then Beyond".

In 2009, Pixar released a feature film called "Up".

If you've already seen "Up", you might find it remarkably similar to "Above Then Beyond". Click HERE to watch "Above Then Beyond".

I found an interview with Pete Docter, writer and director of "Up", and this is what he said about building the film's concept:

Pete Docter - "

We came up with this idea of a floating house, and we worked backwards from that, thinking, "How did this guy get into the floating house?" And we came up with this whole backstory of him meeting this girl, and they fell in love, and they had this whole relationship. And this failed promise, that they didn't ever get to go down to South America to live this adventure that they always wanted to do. And so it was kind of based on that."

The resemblance to the students' short film made me uneasy, so I had to look into this.

I contacted Yannick Banchereau and asked:

"Did someone in your team go on to work for Pixar?"

"Did Pixar buy the rights to your concept?"

"Was this purely a coincidence?"

His response (translated by Google Translate):

Yannick Banchereau

- "Well, no, none of us went to work at Pixar, if you know someone who is in Supinfgraph, you should know that ESRA has a partnership with Pixar, so we concluded that for Pixar to see our film among those that ESRA had sent them, and they "kept" (stolen?) the idea into a feature film ...
Unfortunately the film does not belong to us because this was done as part of our studies, so we can do nothing ...
Thank you for your interest, it's good to see that someone has acknowledged our film (even if the quality is far from the Pixar)"

Personally, I can't help it to think that Pixar used the students' idea. If they did, it's disappointing that the acknowledgment for these students cannot be found anywhere.

I just stumbled upon this video. The visuals are amazing and it's definitely something I'd like to experiment with. For some reason it reminds me of the Calabi-Yau manifold. I especially love the transient structures at 1m52s.

Playing With My New Camera

I went home (to Ontario) for the long weekend and had a chance to try out my new camera. My sister and her friends usually have jam sessions and here's one of them. I'm really happy the way it turned out, but I could've used a glidecam. I'm also really impressed with the audio recorder.... excited to shoot more!

Camera Shopping

I've always been interested in filmmaking, but no so much in photography. In the past few years, since I started getting into 3D animation, the principles of photography surely became indispensable in any 3D piece I had in mind. I especially started appreciating photography even more in the past year when I was introduced to the most incredible works through Escape Into Life, Behanced, Booooooom, and Motionographer. On top of that, an itch to make my own little narrative, along with the new affordable digital SLRs (particularly the Marks and 7D) pushing the limits in video quality, it felt like the right time to start shopping around for a new camera.

As soon as I left Indonesia*, I've been keeping my eyes open for the 7D. But a few days ago, Canon announced the release of a new DSLR with the same video quality for less than half the price.

I was set. Next month, I'll have the 550D. Or will I?

The other day, I saw a video that made a mini-explosion in my chest. Maybe it was the music; maybe it was the 'Life Aquatic' style; maybe it was the photography; maybe it was atrial fibrillation; or maybe it was everything. Now I want a Super8 camera.

*A 42-day trip I took through Java, Bali, and Lombok. It was wonderful.

New website in the works

After bouncing around for the past year (location- and career-wise), I'm finally finding my 'way'. I'm currently a fulltime CG artist at a biotech firm in British Columbia, and enjoying it very much. I originally moved here from Paris to do a Masters degree in cell biology at UBC, but soon realized that it wasn't for me. Everything perfectly fell into place after deciding to withdraw from the program in December. (Especially after hearing the great news that Pixar is opening a new studio here!) Now I'm preparing a website for my portfolio; and I'm also preparing one for The Lamarck Society.
The Lamarck Society is my most ambitious project; started together with some friends. It revolves around the idea of making documentaries on random subjects (emphasizing on arts, sciences, social issues, and environmental issues) while sailing around the world. I thought it would be fun to use The Life Aquatic as a model (being a big Wes Anderson fan). So, I've been busy trying to get these websites out!

I went to see Dan Deacon, and it turned out to be a really good show! I haven't felt that much energy at a show in a while. If you ever have a chance to see him, you must go. I've been in Paris for just over 1 month now... and I've been really lucky on the job search. Three weeks after arriving, I began to get really discouraged and had seriously considered a retreat to Indonesia for some surf. Then on the last day of August, I get a job at Haagen Dazs, a teaching job at an english high school, AND a freelance job at Le Pivot studio. It all hit me in an instant. So now I'm a sciences & math teacher at The Victor Hugo School. The freelance job I did at Le Pivot involved lighting/rendering/compositing of a car in many background photos. It was quite the challenge, but it was definitely worth it. Takeo and Tomomi are amazing to me, and I'm always trying to spend my time in the studio with them. I'm learning something new everyday there, including Japanese! That's me on the left, pulling an 'all-nighter' with Mathieu (concept artist) and Takeo (who's behind the camera). You can see Le Pivot's work here. "Mata ashta"!

Almost a month ago, I arrived from Thailand. I went for 46 days backpacking alongside my close friend (Ryan) to Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam. It was an amazing experience. (Our little adventure is tastefully written in much detail here.) I can honestly say it served me well; a unique form of therapy per se! Now I'm ready to move on...
